liberation (n.)(v.) offers a few different ways to get involved:

Get involved

Liberation is a shared studio, gallery, and community-based collaborative practice in Brentwood, Maryland. We invite artists, neighbors, and cultural workers to help shape what happens here through making, showing work, conversation, and mutual support.

Making space

Afropessimism situates our gestures to community and collaboration: we begin from an understanding of anti-Blackness, misogyny, ablelism, queer-phobia and colonialism as foundational to the social order. From that basis, we approach space, resources, and community discourse as materials for arts & community based interventions.

The familiar invitation is to seek a seat at the table. We’re building another table, then an addition to the house, and maybe a guerilla garden: room to gather, means to produce, and another economy of attention. Studios, exhibitions, and conversations give this work material form. liberation’s medium is political economy.

Community participants

You don’t need a studio here to be part of liberation. Join a salon, propose a project, help host a gathering, or get involved in an exhibition, screening, or workshop.

Show work with us. We welcome conversations about exhibitions, screenings, and collaborative projects that engage the space and its community. Share your work or an idea to begin a conversation about possibilities.

Come to salon. Salon is our recurring gathering for conversation, shared study, critique, and exchange. Bring work in progress, a question, something to share, or your attention. Together, we make room for sustained encounters with art, ideas, and one another.

Studio collaborators

Studio collaborators can arrange access to shared tools, equipment, and workspace without renting a dedicated studio. Equipment access requires an agreement, appropriate insurance, and authorization and orientation for the tools you’ll use. Renters or homeowners insurance may provide suitable coverage; confirm coverage for your activities with your insurer.

We encourage collaborators to participate in the life of the space—attending salon, sharing knowledge, helping with programs, or contributing to collective care and upkeep. Participation is voluntary, with room for different capacities and ways of contributing.
